April in Athens
It should be Spring, but after a Spring -like March, winter has re-emerged. I hope
this condition is ephemeral for the sake of our newly arrived participants from
the University of Chicago and the Consortium from Alaska, Oregon and Washington State.
For the moment its lectures on-site with woolens, and skiing on Mt. Parnassus.
Some of the hardier students go jogging in the early morning around the old marble Stadium
(built in 1896 for the first revival of the Olympic Games); others contemplate their
t -shirts and swimsuits with dismay. But even under clouds, the city and the sites have
their own mysterious charm; the air is crisp and verdant with the flowers and trees
already in bloom. The soft rain liberates the parched city and washes away
its chemical residues. Its worth the extra sweater and Spring will soon reward us with
a brighter, cleaner, greener city.

The Soap Factory Revisited
The recent decision by the Greek Ministry of Culture to forbid the construction of a school
in the gardens of the Soap Factory was overturned by the same Ministry after intervention
by the Greek Ministry of Education, paving the way for the destruction of one of the few
remaining green areas in the city.
Although the matter is under consideration by the European Parliament and the
European Commission their influence on the actions of the Greek State appear to be
minimal. A petition, though, is being filed with the Greek Council of State, responsible
for environmental issues.
In Memoriam
Dr. Robert Price, professor of philosophy at The Pennsylvania State University.
He was three times Faculty of Record with the Penn State program in Greece, accompanied by his wife Barbara.
Dr Price combined his extensive knowledge of philosophy and history with charm and humanity.
His dry wit and observant eye made him alert to details and foibles of the protean Greek environment.
He was especially sensitive to students' needs and recognized of the importance
of their journey in discovering a new country and a new awareness of themselves.
He was on the Organizing Committee of The Penn State Greek Program since its inception in 1989.
